Diamonds - A quick guide.

When talking about diamonds you are entering a minefield, with the different terminology and language used it is hard to know if what you are being sold. Here is a quick guide to understanding you diamonds and the sellers.

Lets begin with the facets. The facets simply means every cut edge taken off the diamond. Thus every Edge is a facet. The way the Facets are cut it to show off and bring out the best qualities of every diamond.

Below is a diagram of a diamond with its various parts labelled.

The Pavilion.

The Pavilion is the bottom half of the diamond - the Facets cut below the Girdle - The Pavilion is made from 3 different types of facet: the lower girdle facet, pavilion facet and the cutlet.

There are 16 lower Girdle Facets (In purple) they are called this because they sit just below the Girdle of the diamond. While the 8 Pavilion facets (In green) lay between the girdle facets and the cutlet (In blue) which the the point at the bottom.
The importance of these facets is they redirect the light to exit the diamond through the crown into the eyes of the beholder.

The Round cut Diamonds is known for having most "fire" due to the angles of the cuts reflecting the most light back into the eyes of the observer. Because the round cut take more labor and removes more diamond than other cuts, the round cut usually demands a higher  price then any others. This shape accounts for 75% of all diamonds sold today.

Princess cut

The princess cut has a high degree of brilliance and fire, it is cut that is the closest in shape to the natural rough diamond, thus keeping the waste to a minimum. This is a  relatively new cut has hard square edges and is flattering to long slender fingers.

Cushion Cut

Cushion cut Diamonds gained popularity in the late 19th - 20th centuries and were refereed to as candlelight cuts due to there brilliance given the light from a candle . The Cushion cut diamond has less facets then other shapes making the skill applied to cutting important.

Emerald cut

The emerald cut is preferred by some because the shape of the cuts make the lower grade colours stand out, while it shape may give it less fire then other cuts it does tend to have broader and stronger flashes of light.
